The Building Blocks of Friendship (Day 12)

on March 13, 2012

When I think about my friends, I think back to our friendships came to be.  Most of the friends I have have been my friends for over 20 years.  Some of them I met in junior high school, others I met in college.  We’ve been through years of angst, stages of life such as marriage and parenthood, and tough times and celebrations where we’ve supported each other.

Periodically I reflect on how we’ve grown in age and character, and the things we’re doing to keep our friendship alive.  We make the choice to do so because we love each other, especially when we’ve got time, honesty and trust as key components.

“Draw close to God, and God will draw close to you.” (James 4:8, NLT)

It’s the same way with God.  We don’t meet God and expect to become friends off the bat.  It too takes an investment of time and energy, honesty and trust.  It takes spending time in His word, getting to know Him.  It takes learning what He wants and likes.  It takes going through the honeymoon phase and building up to something greater.   And the cool thing is we don’t have to be perfect at it!

Afterall, this relationship is one that will last forever.  We are as close to God as we choose to be.  Make the choice today.
